How We MetShe says: Jean and I knew of each other's existence for a few years before we started dating, but we consider the night we "met" the one when we first became interested in one another. That was on a Saturday night in the summer of 1988, at the Mattagami bar in Timmins, when we were out with mutual friends.
Second, my boyfriend at the time really did have to work that weekend, so he didn't go out with us. And third, M-J thought to call Jean, and managed to reach him even though she was sure of his address or his father's name. All Jean and I did that evening was dance together (and not even slow ones). We left in separate cars, and Jean soon went back to work. Nonetheless, he says I stayed on his mind, as he did on mine. About a month later, I broke up with my boyfriend, and two days after that, Jean called and asked me out. The timing couldn't have been better, but there too a bit of luck was involved. Jean had almost called me the week before, when I hadn't yet gotten up the nerve to break up with my boyfriend, but Jean's friend J-P came up from Ottawa and Jean decided to spend time with him instead. Our first date was lunch at Mate's, a restaurant with very bad food. Our second took place, in part, at McDonald's. Fortunately, we soon started going out to much better restaurants, and the rest is history.
