Groundhog River Trip

I've just returned from a week long river trip along the Groundhog River, it is an Artic Watershed river in Northern Ontario.

Chatting it up with the Locals! We saw many Moose, Bald Eagles AND Sturgeon! The Sturgeon is a prehistoric relic lurking in significant numbers in the Groundhog River.

I did NOT take these pictures. I found it very difficult to get a picture of these monsters. The one on the left is somewhat larger than the ones we saw! Sturgeon breach much like a Humpback whale does. It is quite dramatic to see this very large fish jump right in front of of your canoe!

This was one of my companions first whitewater trip! Based on the look on his face I'd say it's not the last!

My New Solo Canoe - a Novacraft SuperNova

I aquired a new canoe - this one's a solo boat (Novacraft SuperNova) and I've been enjoying it quite a bit!

A few pictures of my new canoe in the Elora Gorge!

France, Languedoc Region vacation

We visited France's Languedoc - Roussillon Region this spring. Here are a few photos. Cathy will eventually write up a longer version. (More Words = Cathy)

Carcasonne, the second most visited city in France (after Paris). Another ruined castle on top of a mountain.

We also visited the "country" of Andora.

and the gorgeous beach town of Collioure.

We also had a short stay in Paris. Here's Cathy in the Louvre.

Algonquin Park (.. in the snow)

What else! More paddling... soon going to France though just for a change of pace

We are a little looney to be paddling in weather like this!! Our trip to Algonquin Provincial Park in May 2010

It wasn't all bad... but most of it was pretty bad!

Fly-In Canoe Trips 2009

One Fly-In canoe trip was not enough.. so we went to Temagami. Four of us, from the canoe club, flew into Scarecrow Lake which just happens to be adjacent to Ispatina Ridge. Ispatina Ridge is the highest point in Ontario. Of course we had to hike to the top of Ontario and a lovely hike it was. We also 'had' to climb the 'forbiden' fire tower. I do recomend the hike up to Ispatina Ridge... but I don't recommend the hike up the fire tower... Maybee I'm just a big chicken but I would not do that again.

The Sturgeon offered a very diverse landscape; everything from rocky falls with very very steep portages to weed camouflaged portage that were relatively flat. This was my second time down the Sturgeon and it is still one of my favorite trips. Although I am finding it harder...

Left in the wilderness to survive on our own... we did have a lot of steak & stuff though! We flew in to Lac Benoit in a 1951 Beaver (airplane), it is the same plane that appears on the 1999 quater (canadian). At the time the art work was commisioned the plane was based out of Ottawa. We then made our way down the Dumoine River. The injuries notwithstanding it was a great trip and the service at the Deep River Hospital Emergency Room was fast a courteous.

OK! I saw this in a picture once...but in retrospect I might have been looking at the picture upside down 8-(

Quebec City and Charlevoix

We visited Quebec City and Charlevoix in June 09, here are some photos.

Provence, France (March 2009)

We visited Provence in March. It was the second time we've participated in a group. Pauwel's Travel out of Brantford were running a tour that focussed on the history of the region, that also incorporated savoury sides of fabulous food and wine. Cathy will have many many words about our trip. I'll limit this to a few pictures for the time being.
